From where we live now, it must be about ten miles as the raven flies to Pike’s Peak, but you can’t see it from our house. There is a range of the Pike National Forest between our house and the fourteener. But, where we lived while building we had a great view of Pike’s Peak and it was magnificent to watch it change with the weather. One drive out here to the house was the route using Lake Gulch Road and wow, the massive North Face of the peak was stunning. At the time I painted this series I had no idea that climbing the North Face of Pike’s Peak was an option. I didn’t know the crevices and couloirs had names and mapped pathways for climbers, but it is not too surprising. My paintings are pretty loose and not representative of the true difficulty to climb, or treachery of the challenge to ascend or descend the face of the big mountain. My hope would be those who know this mountain will appreciate the attempt to represent this part of it as you might see it driving down I-25 South from Larkspur or out on Lake Gulch Road where I took my reference photos.
